Rahul Gandhi's Request for Two-Day Discussion on Constitution Ahead of Lok Sabha Debate

New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) After continuous disruptions and washouts affecting both Houses of Parliament since the start of the Winter Session, the Lower House is expected to experience 'normalcy' on Friday and engage in a constructive discussion regarding the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India.

A significant debate addressing this historic milestone has been planned in the Lok Sabha for December 13 and 14.

In the meantime, a correspondence from the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has come to light ahead of the eagerly awaited debate in the Lower House.

In a letter dated November 26, 2024, the Congress MP requested a dedicated two-day debate to honor the adoption of the Constitution.

Rahul expressed, "This historic occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly presents a vital opportunity for all MPs to collectively reflect on the legacy of B.R. Ambedkar." He insisted that two days be designated for this focused discussion.

Referencing past debates concerning B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy, Rahul noted, "In 2015, both Houses conducted a two-day, 13-hour discussion on November 26 to commemorate Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary. We also held discussions in both Houses on August 9, 2017, to observe the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, and again in 2022 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the nation’s independence."

This initiative is anticipated to spark a 'credit war' between the ruling BJP and the INDIA bloc, as both parties will aim to claim credit for restoring 'normalcy' to the House.

Chaos and disorder have predominantly characterized both Houses, with the government and opposition trading barbs over various issues. Each party has blamed the other for the frequent washouts. Recently, both sides agreed to resolve the impasse with a two-day discussion focusing on the Constitution.

Today, the leading parties, BJP and Congress, issued a 'three-line whip' to all their Lok Sabha MPs, directing them to ensure their presence in the House on December 13 and 14 for the Constitution debate.

If the House manages to conduct a productive and extended debate as planned, both the Treasury and Opposition benches will likely take pride in the outcome, aiming to convey that it was the other party that hindered the Parliament's functioning.
