Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday, 7 May reaffirmed his government's ambition to transform Shillong into the "football capital of India", launching the 2026 Shillong Sports Association football season with a financial grant of ₹32 lakh from the Chief Minister's Special Grant. The event was held at the Shillong Sports Association Ground in Shillong, drawing players, coaches, officials, and football enthusiasts from across the state.

CM's Vision for Grassroots Football

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma stressed that football's revival in Meghalaya could only be achieved when opportunities reached the remotest corners of the state. "Our vision is clear, we want Meghalaya, and Shillong in particular, to become the football capital of India," he said. He emphasised that sustained investment in players, coaches, tournaments, and leagues — from city level to block level — was essential for the sport's long-term growth.

"We must invest in our players, our coaches, our tournaments, and our leagues. Whether at the city level, district level, or eventually even at the block level, we must create opportunities for young boys and girls to compete, grow, and dream of representing Meghalaya at the highest level," Sangma added.

Rising Financial Support for the Association

The ₹32 lakh grant announced on Thursday marks a steady increase in state support for the Shillong Sports Association. The government had previously extended ₹28 lakh to the association, a figure later revised upward to ₹30 lakh during the previous season. The incremental funding signals a deliberate policy push to institutionalise football development rather than treat it as one-off patronage.

Shillong Sports Association General Secretary Dipshon L. Nongbri thanked the state government for its continued backing and disclosed that nearly 95 per cent of the financial assistance received last season had been distributed as cash prizes among affiliated clubs participating in the Shillong Sports Association Football Tournament.

Infrastructure on the Agenda

Nongbri also urged the government to support the construction of a modern sitting gallery and related infrastructure at the Shillong Sports Association Stadium along the Umkhrah riverfront. He noted that the Detailed Project Report for the proposed project was already prepared, signalling readiness for the next phase of development.

Established in 1916, the Shillong Sports Association is affiliated with over 100 clubs across Greater Shillong and remains one of Meghalaya's oldest football institutions. The association's longevity underscores Shillong's deep-rooted football culture — a cultural asset the state government is now explicitly trying to leverage for national recognition.

Key Attendees and Opening Match

The launch was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, former Sports Minister and Shillong Sports Association President Banteidor Lyngdoh, association officials, and participating teams. The occasion featured the presentation of Shillong Sports Association jerseys and mementoes to dignitaries, the introduction of participating teams, and a ceremonial kickoff.

The opening match of the 2026 season was played between Mawnianglah Youth Sports Association and Sei La Sap Football Club. With infrastructure plans in the pipeline and funding on the rise, the state's football ambitions are moving from rhetoric to measurable action.
