Is Sanjay Raut Exposing an 'Illusion of Numbers' in BMC Election Results?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 16 (NationPress) In a pointed response to the unfolding trends of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut made serious accusations against the BJP and the ruling Mahayuti coalition on Friday. Raut alleged that the figures being reported by the media and official sources are merely an “illusion” crafted to undermine the opposition.
He contended that the BJP is deliberately promoting a misleading narrative of a “sweep” to gain a psychological edge. According to Raut, the actual situation in various wards is significantly closer than what is being portrayed. He accused the BJP of intentionally delaying updates in areas where the Thackeray-led Sena and MNS are in the lead, while prematurely highlighting leads for the BJP.
Further criticizing the State Election Commission, Raut suggested that the counting process is being manipulated to benefit the ruling coalition. He reiterated his concerns regarding the “marker pen” controversy, implying it is part of a broader scheme to “steal” the public mandate.
During a press briefing at Sena Bhavan, Raut remarked: “The BJP aims to dominate Mumbai through financial and muscle power, but the citizens of Mumbai have cast their votes for the Thackeray legacy. The figures displayed on television are a mere mirage created by the ‘Delhi-backed’ apparatus. Let’s wait for the final rounds before we celebrate.”
These allegations surface as early trends indicate that the Mahayuti (BJP–Shinde Sena) alliance is leading in over 125 seats, surpassing the majority threshold of 114 in the 227-member House. The Thackeray–MNS coalition appears to be trailing in many suburban regions.
In response to Raut’s claims, BJP leaders dismissed the accusations as mere “frustration over an impending defeat.” They emphasized that the counting process is transparent, occurring under CCTV monitoring with representatives from all parties present.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis characterized the performance of the BJP–Shiv Sena coalition in the BMC elections as a significant mandate for development. He stated: “The public has overwhelmingly addressed the issues on which we campaigned in the municipal elections statewide. Our agenda moving forward will focus on development, and we dedicate this victory to transforming the lives of the underprivileged and middle class through development.”
