Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday, 16 May joined Sikkim's 51st Statehood Day celebrations in Gangtok, participating in the inauguration and foundation stone-laying ceremonies for 21 development projects valued at a combined ₹223 crore. The event marked one of the largest single-day infrastructure rollouts in the state's recent history.

Key Dignitaries Present

The celebrations drew Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. Addressing the gathering in Nepali, Scindia described the Himalayan state as 'a model of balanced development where progress walks hand in hand with nature, culture and identity,' crediting the momentum to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Connectivity Projects Under NESIDS-Roads

Under the NESIDS-Roads initiative, connectivity works worth over ₹45 crore were inaugurated. These include bridge connectivity linking NH-10 to IBP Road, works over the Rongrong river in Pakyong district, and a crossing over Rangpo Khola in Namchi district. Separately, the foundation stone was laid for the geometric improvement and carpeting of the 15.8-km Rimbi Khola–Yuksam road in Gyalshing district at a cost of ₹24.52 crore, aimed at boosting regional and tourism access.

Mission Sikkim Organics: A ₹360 Crore Organic Economy Push

The centrepiece announcement was the launch of Mission Sikkim Organics, positioned as the state's defining economic identity. The initiative carries an estimated outlay of ₹360 crore and is designed to integrate Sikkim into the global premium organic economy. According to officials, the mission is anchored by the Ministry of DoNER in partnership with the Sikkim government, APEDA, NABARD, NERAMAC, SIOL, farmer-producer organisations, cooperatives, and private stakeholders. It is expected to benefit over 66,000 farmer families across the state. The Ministry of DoNER will contribute ₹85 crore towards infrastructure, aggregation systems, and programme coordination. The mission prioritises certification, processing, branding, and export-market integration, with a specific focus on value chains for large cardamom and ginger.

Other Projects Highlighted

Several works under the SoNEC initiative were also showcased, including augmentation of the Namthang Bazar water supply system, development of academic and science blocks in government colleges, establishment of a Bamboo Industrial Park, and remodelling of the Burtuk heliport. Scindia also noted that the Centre, in coordination with the Sikkim government and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, is working on an alternative alignment to NH-10 to ensure resilient all-weather connectivity for the landlocked state.

With Mission Sikkim Organics now formally launched and infrastructure groundwork laid, the focus shifts to execution — particularly the certification and export linkages that will determine whether the initiative translates into sustained income for the state's farming communities. The alternative NH-10 alignment, if realised, could be a structural game-changer for Sikkim's connectivity and economic resilience.
