Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia arrived in Sikkim on 14 May for a three-day official visit spanning 14–16 May, covering the state's Statehood Day celebrations and a broad sweep of developmental reviews across infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and education. Officials confirmed the visit, noting it was designed to assess ongoing Central initiatives in the Himalayan state.

Statehood Day Programme

Scindia, who holds the Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) portfolios, will join Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan at the Statehood Day celebrations in Gangtok. The Vice President is scheduled to lay foundation stones and inaugurate several projects backed by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), including the flagship USP Organic Farming Project — a signature initiative positioning Sikkim's certified organic agriculture on a larger national platform.

Key Sites on the Itinerary

The Minister's schedule spans multiple districts and locations: Namchi, Ravangla, Yangang, and Gangtok. Engagements include visits to Sikkim State University, the historic Temi Tea Garden, Buddha Park, and the Bhaleydunga Skywalk Project — an emerging tourism infrastructure landmark in the state. Scindia will also review the NESIDS-OTRI Project at Nathu La, part of the Centre's push to enhance connectivity and economic opportunity along the sensitive border corridor.

Lean Convoy, Deliberate Signal

Officials noted that Scindia has kept the accompanying convoy — vehicles and personnel — to the minimum necessary, in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on fuel conservation, fiscal discipline, and responsible public expenditure amid prevailing global economic pressures. The decision is being read as a visible alignment with the Centre's austerity messaging at the official level.

Modi's Recent Sikkim Visit Sets the Context

The Scindia visit follows a recent trip to Sikkim by Prime Minister Modi, during which he laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth approximately ₹4,000 crore. Addressing a public gathering at Paljor Stadium, Modi described the Northeast as India's 'Ashtalakshmi' and called Sikkim an integral part of that vision. He also signalled a shift in the Centre's Northeast engagement — from the earlier 'Act East' policy to what he termed an 'Act Fast' approach, underscoring urgency in delivery. Scindia's review visit is widely seen as an operational follow-through to that political commitment.

Broader Northeast Focus

Officials said the visit reflects the Centre's sustained emphasis on tourism promotion, sustainable agriculture, educational development, and infrastructure expansion across Sikkim and the wider northeastern region. This is consistent with a pattern of senior ministerial visits to the Northeast that have intensified since the third term began, with DoNER allocations and NESIDS funding emerging as key delivery vehicles.
