Is a case against Seeman for his 'controversial' remarks in Tamil Nadu justified?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Oct 19 (NationPress) A case has been filed against Seeman, Chief Coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), under two provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly making provocative and offensive remarks during an interview with a popular YouTube channel.
The controversy began in November of the previous year when Seeman made statements that were considered controversial regarding the judiciary, legislature, and Parliament during an online interview.
His comments were met with backlash, accused of undermining the constitutional institutions of India.
Following the interview, attorney Charles Alexander lodged a complaint with the police, urging legal action against Seeman for inciting division and disrespect toward the nation's democratic institutions.
When no action was taken by the police, Alexander sought a direction from the Egmore Magistrate Court to register a case.
However, the Egmore court rejected the plea, prompting the lawyer to appeal to the Madras High Court.
During the hearing, the High Court noted that Seeman's remarks appeared to be inflammatory and capable of inciting public unrest. Consequently, the court instructed the police to register a case and initiate necessary legal actions.
In compliance with the High Court's order, the Thirumangalam Police have charged Seeman with promoting enmity between various groups based on religion, race, or other identities, along with making statements that could disturb public peace.
Police officials stated that the investigation will review the entire transcript and video of the interview to ascertain whether the comments were made with the intent to provoke or insult any community.
Authorities assured that suitable actions would follow the completion of the inquiry.
The NTK leader, known for his passionate speeches and strong Tamil nationalist views, has encountered numerous controversies in the past regarding his statements. As of now, party officials have not responded to the recent case.
