The situation in the national capital is alarming, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) has surpassed the 350 threshold in multiple locations, categorizing the air quality as 'very poor' to 'severe'.
Official reports indicate that Chandni Chowk recorded an AQI of 384, followed by 376 in Ashok Vihar, 373 in Bawana, 386 in Punjabi Bagh, 383 in Okhla Phase-2, and a concerning 399 in Pusa. Nehru Nagar reported an AQI of 397, which is classified as 'very severe'. Additionally, Anand Vihar had an AQI of 345, and Alipur recorded 332, both indicating extremely poor air quality.
In Noida, the air quality remained subpar at all monitored stations. Sector-1 showed an AQI of 359, Sector-125 was at 352, Sector-116 at 347, and Sector-62 at 342, reflecting the toxic air conditions prevailing in the city. Some areas, like Mathura Road, recorded a lower AQI of 259, but still fell within the poor category.
Ghaziabad also remained significantly affected by pollution, with an AQI of 312 in Sanjay Nagar and 282 in Indirapuram, posing serious health risks for residents throughout the NCR.
In addition to deteriorating air quality, weather conditions have further complicated life for residents. On Thursday, dense fog blanketed the Delhi-NCR region, severely limiting visibility and disrupting daily activities. Many parts of the national capital and neighboring areas reported visibility issues, with some locations experiencing nearly zero visibility.
The capital continues to endure harsh winter conditions, having been under a cold wave for the fourth consecutive day.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Thursday, cautioning about cold wave conditions in isolated areas.
The predicted maximum temperature is expected to range between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius. The IMD has urged residents to exercise caution as cold conditions and dense fog are anticipated to persist.
On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, while the minimum temperature plummeted to 3.8 degrees Celsius, significantly below the seasonal average. The IMD noted that Delhi is experiencing one of its coldest winters in recent years.
Meanwhile, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has alerted passengers about potential flight delays due to the dense fog. DIAL has advised that flights are operating under CAT III conditions and encouraged passengers to check with airlines for the latest updates.
