Sangli temple wall collapse kills 6 devotees amid heavy rain
At least six devotees were killed and several others critically injured after a wall and tin-sheet structures on the premises of the Margudevi Temple in Mothewadi village, Sangli district, collapsed under the force of sudden gusty winds and heavy rainfall on Tuesday, 13 May 2025. The tragedy struck during the Margubai Devi Yatra, an annual fair that draws large crowds of pilgrims from across the region.
How the Collapse Unfolded
According to Sangli Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi, approximately 350 devotees were present on the temple premises when the disaster struck. As strong winds and heavy rain lashed the area without warning, many sought shelter along a boundary wall and beneath adjoining tin-sheet structures. The structures, unable to withstand the wind pressure, gave way suddenly, trapping several people under the debris.
