Kolkata, Nov 12 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended a smuggler and confiscated gold valued at over Rs 88 lakh from him near the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in the North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal.
According to a senior BSF official, troops from the 143 Bn, BSF, stationed at the Tarali-1 Border Outpost, received actionable intelligence regarding a gold smuggling attempt through their area of jurisdiction. The intelligence indicated that the suspect, disguised as a farmer, would travel from the Hakimpur market to Swarupdah.
In response, the troops established extra checkpoints along the dirt paths winding through the paddy fields.
At approximately 11:24 AM, a man, appearing as a local farmer, was spotted cycling towards the main road from the fields and was subsequently stopped and searched.
The search revealed a packet wrapped in brown paper hidden within a knot of his lungi. Upon opening the packet, the troops discovered six gold biscuits. The individual was then apprehended and brought to the Tarali-1 BOP.
During initial questioning, the smuggler admitted that the gold had been smuggled from Bangladesh.
The captured individual, along with the confiscated gold, has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal proceedings.
The biscuits weighed a total of 712 grams and were estimated to be worth nearly Rs 88.34 lakh.
