Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 26 (NationPress) V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, attempted to downplay the uproar surrounding the image of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi with Unnikrishnan Potti, who has been arrested in the Sabarimala gold heist case. He labeled Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s accusations as “cheap” and claimed that the CPI(M) is trying to shift focus from more pressing issues facing the government.
Satheesan stated that the so-called photo controversy is being artificially inflated to distract from the alleged gold theft scandal at Sabarimala.
“This is a classic tactic by the CPI(M) to obscure a genuine issue by fabricating a controversy,” he asserted.
He dismissed the implications suggested by the Chief Minister, clarifying that meeting Sonia Gandhi is neither unusual nor challenging.
“Anyone can arrange a meeting with Sonia Gandhi with an appointment. There’s nothing remarkable about it,” he remarked, adding with irony that securing a meeting with the Chief Minister is significantly more difficult.
“After all, the Chief Minister is a well-guarded individual,” Satheesan quipped.
He further argued that if a photograph with the Chief Minister is considered normal, then having a picture with Sonia Gandhi is equally unremarkable.
“This selective outrage reveals the emptiness of the claims,” he said.
Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of attempting to shield its own members implicated in the Sabarimala gold heist.
“Two CPI(M) officials, charged in the gold theft case from Sabarimala, remain incarcerated. The photo controversy is being employed to divert public attention from that reality,” he claimed.
He also criticized the Chief Minister’s recent press conference, calling it “substandard” and lacking seriousness.
“The Chief Minister is trying to shield those implicated in the gold theft,” Satheesan stated.
Regarding the image of Unnikrishnan Potti with the Chief Minister, Satheesan questioned whether the opposition ever suggested that the Chief Minister was implicated in the gold theft simply because of such a photograph.
“Did we ever claim that the Chief Minister is involved in the gold theft just because a photo emerged?” he asked.
Satheesan’s comments highlight Congress’ effort to redirect the discussion back to allegations of corruption, while the CPI(M) attempts to maintain focus on political optics.
