Chennai, Oct 15 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed that the recent stampede in Karur, which resulted in multiple fatalities, has profoundly shocked the state’s populace. He linked this unfortunate incident to inadequate crowd management and the significant delay in the appearance of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader, Vijay.
While offering condolences to the victims’ families, the Chief Minister informed the Assembly that the event was sanctioned under 11 specific conditions and provided with enhanced security compared to standard political gatherings.
Despite this, he highlighted that the organisers neglected to provide essential facilities like drinking water, food, and toilets for the large assembly of people who had arrived hours ahead of the scheduled program.
Stalin clarified that the chaos ensued following a seven-hour delay in Vijay’s arrival, which led to the crowd surging towards the stage. He remarked, “The meeting was allowed at the request of the organisers, with security measures involving 606 police personnel and officials. Yet, the organisers dismissed multiple police warnings and insisted on conducting it solely at the sanctioned location.”
He further mentioned that while ambulances were promptly dispatched to aid the injured, some were obstructed by irate party supporters, complicating rescue efforts.
Stalin emphasized that just two days prior, an AIADMK meeting at the same location had concluded peacefully under similar conditions, suggesting that the disorder during the Karur rally was preventable.
The Chief Minister added that post-mortem examinations were carried out that very evening to facilitate the swift return of bodies to the grieving families.
“Political parties need to act with responsibility and ensure safety regulations are adhered to during gatherings. The government responded to the situation per legal guidelines and will comply with the Supreme Court’s ultimate decision,” he urged, calling for shared accountability to avert such tragedies in the future.
In contrast, Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami held the state government accountable for the occurrence, asserting that the calamity could have been averted with appropriate security. This led to heated exchanges after he requested the removal of certain statements from the Assembly records. Speaker M. Appavu warned that action would be taken if disruptions continued.
Shortly after, AIADMK MLAs engaged in a sit-in protest and subsequently exited the Assembly.
