Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 20 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, vehemently criticized the recent Income Tax (IT) raid at the home of K. Selvaperunthagai, the President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, claiming it was a calculated effort to undermine the Opposition's election campaign right before the Assembly elections.
In a statement on X, CM Stalin accused the BJP-led Central government of employing intimidation tactics, with less than 48 hours left for the campaign deadline.
“I unequivocally denounce this scheme to obstruct the campaign of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President, brother Selvaperunthagai. The BJP government, gripped by the fear of losing, appears to have forgotten that India is a democratic nation and is attempting to thwart Opposition parties at this critical juncture. The people of Tamil Nadu will respond appropriately to such authoritarian measures,” he remarked.
This statement followed the IT officials conducting searches at Selvaperunthagai's residence in Kilpauk, Chennai, starting Monday morning.
The Congress leader, who is in the fray from the Sriperumbudur Assembly constituency, alleged that he was unlawfully detained during the operation under the guise of a house search.
On social media, Selvaperunthagai claimed that he was being held in custody by IT officials throughout the raid and expressed concern about the conduct of the search, particularly as it involved officers who did not speak Tamil.
“I have been unlawfully detained under the pretext of an Income Tax raid in the Sriperumbudur constituency by Hindi-speaking officers,” he stated in his online post.
The situation has incited significant political backlash in the State, with Opposition leaders accusing the Central government of misusing federal agencies to target political adversaries during this pivotal final phase of campaigning.
The timing of the raid is particularly notable, as senior Congress figure Rahul Gandhi is presently campaigning in Tamil Nadu.
As the political tension escalates, this incident is likely to further heighten the already charged electoral atmosphere in the State, where campaigning is about to conclude ahead of the elections.
