MK Stalin's security downgraded from Z+ to Z after Tamil Nadu review
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M.K. Stalin has had his security cover scaled down from Z+ to Z category, following a periodic threat assessment conducted by the Tamil Nadu Police on 30 August. Officials described the revision as a routine rationalisation of protection deployment, not a withdrawal of cover.
How the Review Was Conducted
The assessment was carried out by the Core Cell Security Wing at the State Secretariat in Chennai. Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Home Secretary K. Manivasan, and Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal were among the senior officers who participated, examining intelligence inputs and Stalin's current protection requirements.
Security cover for VIPs and VVIPs in Tamil Nadu is reassessed every six months. The exercise weighs intelligence reports, the nature and immediacy of threats, public exposure, travel patterns, and overall protection needs. A category may be retained, enhanced, or reduced based on the committee's findings.
What the Revised Cover Includes
Under the new arrangement, Stalin will continue to receive substantial police protection. Security teams will be positioned across the front, core, and rear segments of his convoy, with pilot, escort, backup, and close-protection vehicles deployed during travel and public engagements. The number of personnel assigned was not disclosed by officials.
The revised cover will remain in force until the next scheduled assessment, unless fresh intelligence warrants an earlier review.
The Political Context
The downgrade comes months after Stalin and the DMK suffered a significant defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. The party, which had won 133 seats in 2021 and governed the state for five years, was reduced to 59 seats. Actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the largest party, winning 108 seats.
Compounding the setback, Stalin lost his own constituency of Kolathur — a seat he had held for three consecutive terms. TVK candidate V.S. Babu secured 82,997 votes against Stalin's 74,202, winning by a margin of 8,795 votes. Stalin has since challenged Babu's election before the Madras High Court.
Officials Insist Decision Is Apolitical
Despite the timing, officials maintained that the security revision was based solely on a professional threat assessment and was entirely unrelated to Stalin's political standing or the election outcome. Stalin remains the DMK president and one of Tamil Nadu's most prominent opposition figures, even without a legislative seat.
The next scheduled review will determine whether his protection category is retained at Z or revised further.
