New Delhi, Aug 7 (NationPress) The data, traffic, and other information generated by Elon Musk's Starlink will be securely stored within India. Furthermore, the domestic user traffic will not be mirrored to any external system or server, as confirmed in Parliament on Thursday.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a Unified License (UL) to Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, adhering to the required terms and security conditions.
Starlink is poised to launch its cost-effective internet services in the country shortly.
Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, stated in a written response to the Rajya Sabha that the security protocols mandate the establishment of ground stations in India to ensure that satellite communication services do not route any user traffic to gateways outside of India. Additionally, it prohibits the copying and decryption of Indian data outside the nation, ensuring that Indian user traffic remains unmirrored on any foreign systems or servers.
The DoT has also consulted the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regarding the terms and conditions associated with spectrum assignment, including pricing, for these satellite-based communication services.
According to the minister, this new sector is anticipated to create job opportunities across the nation, involving the installation, operation, and maintenance of the telecommunications network, including user terminal equipment.
Starlink obtained its Unified License in June and received authorization from IN-SPACe last month. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre granted approval for Musk’s Starlink to operate in India for a five-year duration.
Starlink must now secure spectrum from the government and set up the necessary ground infrastructure for service delivery. The DoT plans to provide trial spectrum to the US-based company for its security compliance demonstrations.
