Sullivan Engages with NSA Doval, Reinforces US Commitment to Civil Nuclear Cooperation with India

New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan on Monday highlighted the initiatives of the outgoing Biden administration to finalize essential measures to delist Indian nuclear entities, aimed at enhancing civil nuclear cooperation and ensuring resilient clean energy supply chains.

Sullivan met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Indian counterpart NSA Ajit Doval, and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar during his farewell visit to India, which spans two days, ahead of Donald Trump taking office as the 47th President of the United States on January 20.

Accompanied by a group of senior US officials, Sullivan engaged in discussions with the two NSAs, who have maintained a productive high-level dialogue covering a wide-ranging bilateral, regional, and global agenda. They assessed the ongoing progress in their discussions, focusing on various sectors such as defence, cybersecurity, and maritime security.

During the meeting, US NSA Jake Sullivan provided updates on the Biden administration's revisions to US missile export control policies under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), which are expected to enhance US commercial space cooperation with India. The joint press statement released by both nations after the Sullivan-Doval dialogue emphasized the advancements made by the United States and India as strategic partners, committed to peaceful nuclear cooperation. Sullivan underscored ongoing efforts to finalize steps to delist Indian nuclear entities, promoting civil nuclear collaboration and resilient clean energy supply chains.

Both NSAs recognized that the iCET, launched by Prime Minister Modi and US President Joe Biden during the Quad Summit in Tokyo in May 2022, is crucial for enhancing the strategic ties between the two nations.

Since then, the two officials have initiated concrete projects across diverse fields, including Artificial Intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, telecommunications, defence, and space.

Sullivan also had an audience with PM Modi, presenting him with a letter from President Biden.

During their discussions, Prime Minister Modi noted that the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership has reached unprecedented heights in areas such as technology, defence, space, biotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

"Meeting with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was a pleasure. The India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership has achieved new milestones in technology, defence, space, biotechnology, and AI. I look forward to leveraging this momentum for the benefit of our peoples and global welfare," PM Modi shared on X.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that PM Modi and Sullivan positively evaluated the substantial progress made in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership over the past four years.

"Recalling his various meetings with President Biden, including during his visit to the US in September 2024 for the Quad Leaders’ Summit, PM Modi expressed appreciation for President Biden’s role in strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, which creates a lasting legacy," the PMO statement read.

PM Modi also extended his best wishes to President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

Earlier in the day, Sullivan met with EAM S. Jaishankar to deliberate on a variety of strategic, regional, and bilateral matters.

"I was delighted to meet US NSA Jake Sullivan in New Delhi today. We continued our discussions on enhancing bilateral, regional, and global cooperation. I appreciated the candidness of our conversations over the past four years and acknowledged his personal contributions to strengthening the India-US partnership," EAM Jaishankar remarked.

The discussions encompassed a spectrum of strategic, regional, and bilateral topics, including the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) during Sullivan's visit to the capital.
