Bhopal, Feb 7 (NationPress) The eagerly anticipated Surajkund International Crafts Mela has officially launched in Haryana on Friday, marking a historic moment as Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are recognized as the theme states for the first time.
This vibrant 17-day cultural festival, which will continue until February 23, promises an impressive showcase of local and global crafts, handlooms, traditional arts, alongside a wide array of multi-cuisine delights for attendees.
A dedicated pavilion that emphasizes the rich culture, crafts, and traditions of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha will be strategically located near the VIP entrance. As theme states, both regions will have a greater number of stalls to present their diverse artistic expressions, craftsmanship, and cultural richness.
“This marks the inaugural instance of two states being designated as theme states, providing them with a unique opportunity to present their artistic heritage. Out of the over 1,200 stalls at the Surajkund Craft Mela, at least 40 will be reserved for each state,” stated Anurag Uikey, an official from the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, in a conversation with IANS.
The participation of Madhya Pradesh will highlight its extensive artistic traditions, featuring indigenous crafts from various areas within the state. Live demonstrations by artisans will showcase traditional art forms, detailed handloom weaving, and native crafts. Cultural performances by folk and tribal artists will also enrich the state’s representation.
In addition to the theme states, the festival will also welcome eight northeastern states — Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim — as cultural partners. These states will display their distinctive handloom and handicraft traditions, offering visitors insight into their rich heritage.
Moreover, the Surajkund Craft Mela will include international participation from BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) nations, such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Their involvement will elevate the fair’s global significance, encouraging cross-cultural artistic exchanges.
Besides cultural displays, the fair will also provide modern amenities, with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation serving as the ticketing partner.
