Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 6 (NationPress) Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi announced on Saturday his willingness to temporarily resign from his position for two days to spearhead a protest advocating for the rights of the transgender community if the Pinarayi Vijayan government does not fulfill its commitment to provide financial aid.

This declaration was made during an Onam celebration held in the state capital, which included members of the transgender community.

“Should the state government fail to offer support, a 'Karuvannur model' protest will be organized ahead of next year's Onam,” Gopi stated.

The celebration commenced with a ceremonial lighting of a lamp, followed by an array of cultural performances.

Individuals from the transgender community who have achieved excellence in various fields were recognized during the event. The celebration concluded with the distribution of Onakkodi (new clothes for Onam) and a traditional Onam feast, Onasadya, in which Gopi participated.

“Contributing positively to the transgender community is akin to receiving a divine blessing. The state must provide the promised financial support. Personally, I will also allocate funds for surgeries for ten additional transgender individuals. My support for them is unwavering. If the government remains inactive, I will indeed resign from my ministerial role for two days to lead the protest, after which I will resume my ministerial duties,” he emphasized.

The remarks from the actor-turned-politician spotlight the escalating concerns regarding the lack of timely governmental assistance for transgender individuals, many of whom rely on state programs for healthcare and rehabilitation.

His statement has struck a chord within activist circles, viewed as an unusual display of solidarity from a Union minister.

Throughout his political career, Suresh Gopi has consistently supported the transgender community in Kerala amid their challenges.

Previously, Gopi contributed Rs 12 lakh to Amrita Hospital to help cover the costs of gender reassignment surgeries, with ten surgeries already completed successfully.
