Bihar's SVU Takes Strong Action Against Corruption: 28 Cases in Just Two Months
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, March 2 (NationPress) The battle against corruption in Bihar has accelerated in 2026, with the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) amplifying its efforts under a strict zero-tolerance policy.
During a press briefing on Monday, SVU Director General Jitendra Singh Gangwar announced that the Bureau has initiated 28 cases in the initial two months of 2026 (January and February), resulting in an average of approximately 14 cases per month.
The reported cases encompass severe crimes including bribery and the illegal possession of disproportionate assets (DA).
Emphasizing a major success, the DG revealed that judicial sentences have already been issued in four cases this year.
He expressed optimism that the number of convictions in 2026 will exceed the previous year's total of 30 cases.
The SVU is committed to ensuring rapid investigations and robust prosecutions to promptly deliver justice to corrupt officials.
However, the SVU is currently grappling with a considerable manpower shortage.
As per Gangwar, nearly one-third of the Inspector and DSP-level positions in the department remain unfilled, which is intensifying the operational strain on the remaining personnel.
To mitigate this issue, the SVU has formally requested Police Headquarters for the deployment of additional staff.
The Vigilance Office operates continuously and acts immediately upon receiving credible information regarding corruption.
The DG called on the public to swiftly report any instances of bribery or misconduct by government officials to the Bureau, underscoring that citizen cooperation is vital for fortifying the anti-corruption initiative.
With ongoing efforts, stricter enforcement, and heightened public engagement, the SVU aspires to make 2026 a pivotal year in Bihar’s anti-corruption campaign.
Earlier today, the SVU apprehended Roshan Kumar, an Assistant Engineer associated with the District Education Project in Bettiah, for reportedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.
Officials stated that the engineer allegedly solicited the bribe from a contractor in exchange for approving bills related to school repair and renovation projects, which included the installation of submersible pumps across various government schools.
