Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 29 (NationPress) The Goethe-Zentrum, a German cultural centre in Thiruvananthapuram, is preparing to host a distinctive Tabla Jugalbandi at the Goethe Amphitheatre on February 6. This event will honor the iconic tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain, who sadly passed away in December of the previous year in the United States.

This homage will feature celebrated tabla musicians Florian Schiertz from Germany and Prafulla Athalye from India, accompanied by the distinguished sarangi master and Hindustani vocalist Dilshad Khan, promising a rare evening filled with musical excellence.

Ustad Zakir Hussain, revered as one of the most impactful percussionists in history, has left a profound legacy in the realm of music. This event aims to serve as a fitting tribute, presenting a unique fusion of Indian and international musical traditions.

Originating from Singen, Germany, Florian Schiertz is a protégé of Indian music legends such as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Udai Mazumdar, and Pandit Ashutosh Bhattacharya. A highly esteemed tabla artist in Europe, Florian has collaborated with renowned musicians like sitar master Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee and flutist Rakesh Chaurasia. His collaborations include over 60 performances across Europe and India with Pandit Kushal Das.

Florian has also initiated a tabla and percussion project with German classical percussionist Wolfram Winkel, which was aired on German television, showcasing a groundbreaking fusion of musical cultures. Besides performing, Florian also imparts knowledge at the Jazz and Rock School in Konstanz, Germany.

A tenth-generation sarangi maestro from Jodhpur, Dilshad Khan was mentored by his uncle, the legendary Ustad Sultan Khan. Acclaimed for his expertise with the sarangi, he worked alongside Ustad Zakir Hussain on the Grammy-winning album Global Drum Project in 2009 and has contributed to more than 500 Hindi film soundtracks.

An ‘A’ grade artist with All India Radio, Prafulla Athalye is a senior disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha. A global ambassador of the tabla, his performances have been showcased at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Arizona. Prafulla has shared the stage with legendary figures like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, and Pandit Birju Maharaj, among others.
