Hyderabad, July 28 (NationPress) The Telangana Cabinet convened on Monday to plan a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu next month, requesting her assent for two Bills approved by the State Assembly aimed at increasing reservations for Backward Classes to 42 percent in the realms of education, employment, and local governance.
Members of Parliament from Congress and its allies, alongside ministers, MLAs, and MLCs from the state, will travel to New Delhi to present a memorandum to the President.
This decision emerged from a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the state Secretariat.
During a media briefing, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar stated that prominent leaders, including the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, will spearhead the delegation.
Prabhakar noted that they would seek an appointment with the President on August 5, 6, and 7.
He mentioned that all ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and other public representatives would head to the national capital and remain there for three days.
He called upon public representatives from the BJP and BRS, as well as leaders from all Backward Class organizations and intellectuals, to join them in this significant visit to Delhi.
The Cabinet unanimously resolved to amplify the movement for 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes and to apply pressure on the Central government.
Prabhakar recalled that after the state's caste survey, two Bills were passed by the Assembly in March, which the Governor forwarded to the President for her approval. However, her assent is still pending.
He emphasized that since the 50 percent cap on total reservations has already been surpassed with the 10 percent EWS quota, there should be no obstacles in raising the quota for Backward Classes.
As per the Cabinet's decision, an ordinance was drafted to amend the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act 2018 to ensure 42 percent reservation for BCs in the forthcoming local body elections.
This draft ordinance was submitted to the Governor on July 14, with hopes for prompt approval.
Prabhakar urged Backward Class MPs from the BJP to intervene and secure the Centre's endorsement for the Backward Class Bills, alleging that BJP state president Ramachander Rao has been opposing the Backward Class reservation.
