Hyderabad, Oct 19 (NationPress) The police in Telangana’s Nizamabad town apprehended a repeat offender on Sunday who had been evading capture after fatally stabbing a police constable just two days prior.
Shaik Riyaz was detained near Sarangapur within the jurisdiction of Nizamabad Town 6 Police Station by law enforcement officials, aided by a local resident, Asif.
The Nizamabad Police Commissioner, P. Sai Chaitanya, confirmed that the suspect was arrested alive and dismissed claims of an encounter.
He stated that reports circulating on social media suggesting that police fired at Riyaz were untrue.
A police unit was dispatched to Sarangapur following a tip-off indicating that Riyaz was hiding in a shed. Upon seeing the officers, he attempted to flee. However, Asif, who was nearby, attempted to apprehend him.
As Riyaz lunged at Asif with a knife, the police team successfully surrounded him and made the arrest. Both Riyaz and Asif suffered injuries during the confrontation and were transported to a government hospital for medical care.
Riyaz allegedly murdered Constable E. Pramod, aged 42, after being apprehended for a bike theft incident in Nizamabad on the night of October 17.
Constable Pramod, accompanied by his nephew, attempted to arrest Riyaz. Pramod was riding the bike while his nephew was seated behind him, and they had placed Riyaz between them.
Suddenly, the 24-year-old suspect launched an attack on Pramod with a knife. When the nephew intervened, Riyaz stabbed him as well. Two of Riyaz's accomplices arrived on a bike and assisted in his escape. Although a sub-inspector attempted to intervene, he too was assaulted.
Injured, Pramod was rushed to a hospital, where he was later declared dead by the medical staff. His nephew is currently receiving treatment.
In light of this grave incident, Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivdhar Reddy ordered a manhunt for the assailant.
The DGP expressed sorrow over Pramod's death, lauding him as a dedicated officer. He instructed the Nizamabad Police Commissioner Chaitanya to establish special teams to locate and apprehend Riyaz promptly.
Following the DGP's directives, law enforcement initiated an extensive search for Riyaz, forming nine teams to pursue the suspect.
