Muharram 2025: Thousands join Ashura procession in Srinagar
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thousands of Shia Muslim mourners took to the streets of Srinagar on Friday, 26 June to participate in the 10th Muharram procession, marking Youm-e-Ashura with solemnity and discipline across Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital. The procession, one of the largest Shia gatherings in the region, commenced at Bota Kadal and concluded at the Zadibal area of the city.
How the Procession Unfolded
Mourners beat their chests and chanted elegies in remembrance of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, as the procession moved through designated routes in an orderly manner. Authorities had made repeated appeals for discipline, communal harmony, and respect for the sanctity of the occasion — appeals that were, by all accounts, heeded by participants.
A multi-layer security grid was put in place, with deployment of Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and other security personnel. Drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring ensured round-the-clock vigilance across the procession route, according to police.
What the Police Advisory Said
Srinagar Police issued a detailed public advisory ahead of the procession, urging participants and citizens to observe Muharram with peace, dignity, and restraint. The advisory asked mourners to maintain communal harmony, follow all directions from the administration and police, cooperate with traffic personnel and volunteers, and ensure the procession remained confined to its permitted route and purpose.
The advisory also cautioned against raising provocative slogans, making inflammatory speeches, obstructing traffic or pedestrian movement, or damaging public property. Participants were specifically directed not to display provocative banners, posters, or flags, and not to disrespect the National Flag or display symbols of any foreign country, organisation, or group. Any activity deemed detrimental to the integrity, sovereignty, and unity of India was explicitly prohibited.
The Significance of Youm-e-Ashura
10th Muharram, or Youm-e-Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions at the Battle of Karbala on 10 October 680 CE (10 Muharram 61 AH). Imam Hussain was killed by the army of Umayyad Caliph Yazid after he refused to pledge allegiance to what he considered a corrupt and unjust ruler. The event is regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history, symbolising sacrifice in the pursuit of justice and resistance against tyranny.
In recognition of its religious significance, 10th Muharram is a public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir.
Security and Civic Arrangements
The scale of security deployment reflected both the size of the gathering and the administration's commitment to ensuring an incident-free observance. Officials emphasised that public cooperation and responsible conduct from all participants were central to maintaining the peaceful character of Youm-e-Ashura in Srinagar. This comes amid a broader push by the J&K administration to ensure communal harmony during major religious observances across the Union Territory.
