Bhopal, April 17 (IANS) The Ordnance Factory Itarsi, located in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh, received alarming emails containing threats of an explosion at the site on Thursday.
Upon notification of the threats, a bomb disposal unit along with a police team swiftly arrived at the facility to conduct an investigation.
Senior police officials verified the threats and promptly initiated search operations.
An official revealed that the threatening emails were sent to the factory’s official email accounts. The police undertook a thorough search of the premises and have scheduled additional searches for Friday to ensure safety.
High-ranking police officials were deeply engaged in the operations. Sanjeev Pawar, the officer in charge at the Pathrota police station, stated, “We have filed an FIR against unidentified individuals. The search will resume tomorrow, and we are probing the origin of the emails.”
In response to the alarming situation, stringent security protocols have been enforced at the factory. A police presence remains on-site to oversee the area vigilantly. Authorities are in the process of tracing the source of the emails, although the sender and specific details of the message remain unidentified.
“It cannot be disclosed at this stage,” mentioned one official.
Considering the seriousness of the threat, senior officials assured that investigations are advancing swiftly. Security measures within the factory have been considerably enhanced to avert any potential incidents.
The factory was established as part of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in 1979, aimed at fulfilling India's defense equipment requirements.
The history of Indian Ordnance Factories dates back to the 18th century when the British East India Company established gunpowder factories in Ishapore near Kolkata. These facilities eventually became India's first Ordnance Factories in Cossipore, Kolkata.
During World War II, Ordnance Factories such as the one in Itarsi were critical in supplying the Allied Forces. A significant transition took place in 2021 when the OFB was disbanded, and the factories were corporatized, marking a new phase in their management and operations.
