Agartala, June 4 (NationPress) The youth wing of the ruling BJP ally, Tipra Motha Party (TMP), is set to initiate a statewide protest next week to press for action against the District Magistrate of Gomati district in Tripura.
The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), representing TMP's youth leaders, has accused District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma of disrespecting party chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma on May 25.
YTF President Suraj Debbarma informed the media, "If the state government fails to act against the District Magistrate, we will launch a large-scale statewide protest starting next week. Details regarding the nature of the protest will be disclosed shortly before it begins."
He suggested that a statewide bandh could be organized if the government remains unresponsive to their singular demand.
On June 2, approximately 2,000 YTF activists staged a significant protest outside the District Magistrate's office in Gomati district, locking the main gate for around three hours to demand action against Chakma.
According to TMP leaders, party head Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma and Purna Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), attempted to meet the District Magistrate on the night of May 25 but were denied entry.
An official from the District Magistrate's office stated that Chakma, through security personnel, requested that they return during office hours for a discussion.
This incident has stirred significant political turmoil in Tripura, leading the YTF to orchestrate a shutdown of government offices in Gomati district on June 2.
As per an official from the Chief Minister’s Office, Chief Minister Manik Saha has previously directed Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha to investigate the situation and provide a report.
A TMP delegation, headed by party leader and Minister for State for Industries & Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma, met with the Chief Secretary to demand action against the District Magistrate.
Responses from BJP leaders regarding this matter are still pending.
In contrast, opposition leaders from CPI-M and Congress have characterized the TMP and YTF's protests as a “staged event.”
Leader of Opposition and CPI-M state Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury criticized the June 2 protests as not only undemocratic but also illegal, highlighting the disruption caused to the public.
“The common people endured considerable hardship resulting from the demonstration and the locking of the DM's office,” stated the LoP during a media briefing.
