New Delhi, Jan 21 (NationPress) Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on Tuesday expressed his disappointment regarding the life imprisonment sentence given to Sanjay Roy, the only accused in the horrific rape and murder case involving a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He emphasized that justice has not been served.

"I feel a deep sense of disheartenment. After reviewing media reports on the post-mortem of the innocent young girl, who had a promising future ahead of her, possibly as a doctor, it pains me to know she became a victim of a brutal crime... The level of cruelty she faced is beyond comprehension, and I am convinced that justice remains elusive," Tiwari articulated, demanding the death penalty for the perpetrator.

Earlier that day, the West Bengal government filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court to contest the special court's ruling that sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment, seeking the death penalty instead.

West Bengal Advocate General Kishore Datta has approached the Division Bench comprising Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi to advocate for the death penalty for the convict.

The Division Bench has accepted the petition from the state government.

Following the court's sentencing announcement, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared on Monday night that the state government would challenge the verdict in the Calcutta High Court.

She also confirmed that the state would be pursuing the death penalty for the accused.

In a separate matter, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami revealed on Monday that the state Cabinet has approved the regulations for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), indicating that implementation would commence shortly.

In response to this announcement, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari stated, "Before every election, leaders from Uttarakhand make such declarations. With elections approaching in Delhi, and many Uttarakhand residents here, they have made this statement. We will await the draft or proposal to respond. After reviewing it, we will provide our input."
