Chennai, Feb 4 (NationPress) In a notable initiative geared towards enhancing rural sanitation and uplifting the livelihoods of essential workers, the Tamil Nadu government has raised the monthly remuneration for sanitation personnel working in village panchayats from Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000.

This decision aligns with a comprehensive strategy to modernize waste management systems and tackle the increasing demands faced by rural regions undergoing significant population shifts and urban growth.

The state acknowledges the escalating pressure on local bodies to handle surging quantities of solid waste, leading to the introduction of a new grading system for panchayats, classifying them into 'A', 'B', and 'C' tiers. This reform aims to optimize sanitation services, enhance planning, and distribute resources more effectively based on each panchayat's size, population, and waste generation rates.

Officials indicated that this reclassification would empower local administrations to allocate manpower and resources more strategically, ensuring prompt waste collection and cleaner environments in villages.

As household numbers continue to increase across rural Tamil Nadu, the government has also granted the Commissioner of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj the authority to reevaluate and adjust the workforce of sanitation workers as necessary. This adaptability is expected to bolster service delivery and alleviate the workload of current staff.

The updated salary increment of Rs 1,000 per month will benefit thousands of sanitation workers engaged in solid waste management within village panchayats. This increase applies to workers hired through self-help groups and panchayat federations, who are vital in daily cleaning, waste segregation, and disposal activities in rural locales.

To facilitate the enhanced wages and fortify the sanitation framework, the state has allocated Rs 476 crore annually from the State Finance Commission grant.

This funding will support the additional salary costs while also sustaining ongoing rural cleanliness programs.

This initiative is widely perceived as a recognition of the vital contributions of sanitation workers, who are essential to public health and environmental sustainability in rural areas.

By enhancing compensation and expanding operational capabilities, the government aims to provide safer, cleaner, and more sustainable living conditions in rural Tamil Nadu.

The order is set to take effect immediately, delivering financial relief and enhanced job security to thousands of workers across the state.
