At least four children have tragically lost their lives, and several remain trapped following the collapse of a government school building in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district on Friday. The catastrophic event unfolded in Piplodi village within the Manoharthana area, where the roof of the government school caved in, burying numerous students beneath the rubble.
State Education Minister Madan Dilawar conveyed his sorrow regarding the incident and has called for a thorough investigation. "I have issued strict directives to ensure the best medical support for the affected students. Additionally, I am ordering an inquiry to determine the cause of this devastating event. District officials have arrived at the scene," he stated.
The incident occurred at the Government Higher Primary School, which was housed in an old and deteriorating building. The collapse transpired during school hours, resulting in chaos and panic. Eyewitnesses and local residents reported that over 50 students were in classrooms when the roof suddenly fell due to consistent heavy rain over the preceding days. The crash was followed by screams and confusion as dust and debris filled the area. Without delay, villagers and school personnel initiated rescue operations, manually clearing debris to rescue the trapped children.
The injured students were swiftly transported to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Manoharthana using private vehicles, with many reportedly in critical condition.
Upon receiving the news, police and administrative officials quickly arrived at the site. Rescue operations were ongoing with the assistance of JCB machinery and teams from the disaster response force at the time of this report.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his prayers for minimal casualties, stating on X, "Reports are emerging from Manoharthana, Jhalawar, about a government school building collapsing, causing injuries to several children and teachers. I pray to God for minimal loss of life and a swift recovery for those injured."
