Tragic Coal Mine Incident in Assam: Ongoing Search and Rescue for 5 Missing Workers

Guwahati, Jan 12 (NationPress) The search and rescue operation continued on Sunday in Umrangso, Assam, where at least five labourers are feared dead after becoming trapped in a coal mine. The specialized task force has been diligently conducting searches within the mine to locate and recover the bodies.
A senior official reported, "As the de-watering of the coal mine progresses, the Navy divers are persistently searching for the trapped workers."
On Saturday, the remains of three labourers were retrieved from the mine.
Previously, another labourer's body had been found. One of the three workers identified on Saturday was 27-year-old Ligen Magar, from Dima Hasao district.
Magar's body was discovered floating in the collected water within the mine after Navy divers attempted to recover him, as stated by an official.
The two additional bodies recovered on Sunday were identified as 57-year-old Khusi Mohan Rai, hailing from Magargaon in Kokrajhar district, and 37-year-old Sarat Goyary, from Thailapara, Batashipur in Sonitpur district.
At least nine labourers have been confirmed as being trapped in the coal mine located in Umrangso of the Dima Hasao district for over a week.
Local authorities and police have initiated rescue operations to save the trapped workers.
According to police reports, the precise number of trapped labourers remains uncertain.
Among the nine individuals still trapped, one is a citizen of Nepal, one from West Bengal, while the others are from various regions of Assam.
The individuals have been identified as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khusi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary.
The state administration has requested assistance from the Army to aid in the rescue efforts.
