Nine Workers Caught in Coal Mine in Assam, Chief Minister Sarma Requests Army Assistance

Guwahati, Jan 6 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated on Monday that a minimum of nine workers have been confirmed trapped in a coal mine situated in the Umrangshu region of Dima Hasao district, earlier today.

The local administration and police have commenced an operation to rescue the trapped workers from the mine.

As per police reports, the precise number of individuals trapped inside the coal mine remains uncertain.

Among the nine trapped workers, one is identified as a Nepali national, one hails from West Bengal, while the others originate from various parts of Assam.

The trapped individuals have been named as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khusi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary.

The state government has requested the assistance of the Army for the rescue operation.

Posting on the social media platform X, CM Sarma mentioned, "We have sought the Army's help in the ongoing rescue efforts. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also en route to the incident location to support the operations."

The Chief Minister has dispatched the District Commissioner (DC) and the Superintendent of Police for Dima Hasao district to the site.

The Food and Civil Supply Minister Kaushik Rai is also heading to the location.

"This is distressing news from Umrangshu, where workers are trapped in a coal mine. The exact number and their conditions are still unknown. The DC, SP, and my colleague, Kaushik Rai, are rushing to the site. I pray to God for everyone's safety," CM Sarma posted on X.

The Chief Minister has been in Mumbai for the past three days, meeting several leading industrialists in the country.

He is anticipated to return to the state on Tuesday.

CM Sarma also participated in a roadshow in Mumbai on Monday aimed at attracting investments in the northeastern state.

He expressed that his government is focused on establishing Assam as a favorable investment destination within the next few years.
