Rising Water Levels in Coal Mine Prompt Navy Divers to Assist Rescue in Umrangso, Says CM Sarma

Guwahati, Jan 7 (NationPress) The water level has surged in the coal mine where at least nine labourers have become trapped in the Umrangso area of Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that deep divers from the Indian Navy are being deployed to aid in the rescue efforts. The Navy divers are en route from Visakhapatnam and are anticipated to arrive shortly.
On his social media platform, CM Sarma stated, “Navy deep divers have been called in to support the rescue mission. The current assessment indicates that the water level inside the mine has reached approximately 100 feet. The divers are on their way from Visakhapatnam.”
In addition, a specialized task force consisting of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles has reached Umrangso, located in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, where the trapped labourers are located, according to officials.
A senior official from the Army commented, “The Engineers Task Force, equipped with necessary tools, divers, and medical teams from the #IndianArmy and #AssamRifles, is actively participating in the rescue operations in Umrangso, Assam. All activities are being conducted in close collaboration with the local civil administration.”
Previously, on Monday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that nine labourers have been identified as trapped in the coal mine in the Umrangso area.
The local administration and police have initiated a rescue operation for the trapped labourers.
According to police reports, among the nine trapped labourers, one is a national from Nepal, one hails from West Bengal, while the others are from various regions of Assam. Their identities include Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khusi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary. The state administration has sought the Army's help in the ongoing rescue operation.
