Rescue Operations Underway for Labourers Trapped in Coal Mine in Assam's Umrangso

Guwahati, Jan 7 (NationPress) A specialized team from the Indian Army alongside the Assam Rifles has arrived in Umrangso located in the Dima Hasao district of Assam to assist in the rescue of at least nine labourers trapped within a coal mine, as reported on Tuesday.
A senior officer from the army stated, “Engineers Task Force equipped with necessary tools, divers, and medical personnel from the Indian Army and Assam Rifles are actively participating in the rescue operations in Umrangso, Assam. All actions are being coordinated closely with local civil authorities.”
On the previous day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that at least nine labourers have been pinpointed as trapped inside the coal mine in the locality of Umrangso.
Local administration and police forces have initiated a comprehensive operation to rescue the stranded miners. As per police reports, the total number of individuals trapped within the coal mine remains uncertain.
Among the nine trapped labourers, one is a citizen of Nepal, one hails from West Bengal, while the others come from various regions within Assam.
The trapped miners are identified as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khusi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary.
The local administration has reached out for aid from the Army for the ongoing rescue effort.
On the social media platform X, CM Sarma shared, “We have sought the Army’s support in the current rescue mission. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also en route to the site to assist in the operation.”
The Chief Minister has dispatched the District Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Dima Hasao district to oversee the situation.
Previously, Food and Civil Supply Minister Kaushik Rai hurried to the location. “It’s heartbreaking news from Umrangshu, where the labourers are trapped in a coal mine. The precise count and condition remain unknown. The DC, SP, and my associate, Shri Kaushik Rai, are heading to the scene. I pray for everyone’s safety,” mentioned CM Sarma in a post on X shortly after the news broke on Monday.
