Kolkata, April 8 (NationPress) The internal turmoil within Trinamool Congress appears to be intensifying as a confrontation involving four party Lok Sabha members has turned more complicated, with two of them publicly exchanging accusations and allegations against one another.
This entire incident came to light earlier on Tuesday when BJP’s Information Technology cell chief and the party’s central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, shared four videos on his X account depicting a heated exchange between Trinamool MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Kirti Azad at the premises of the Election Commission of India on April 4.
Alongside the video clips, Malviya asserted that “immediately following the public altercation between the two TMC MPs at the Election Commission’s premises on April 4, the furious MP continued to disparage the ‘Versatile International Lady (VIL)’. He also shared messages from a WhatsApp group that showcased the dispute.
Initially unclear, the identity of the ‘Versatile International Lady’ was later believed to refer to Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra, as veteran party MP Saugata Roy later confirmed another argument involving Banerjee and Moitra in the same location on the same day.
While the situation seemed manageable at first, controversies escalated later in the day when Banerjee, during a press conference, targeted several fellow party MPs.
Without directly mentioning her name, Banerjee stated that he could not accept the lady MP solely because she is “attractive” and “articulate in English”. “She had no ties with Trinamool Congress when we were combatting the Left Front’s misrule in the state. If Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were to ask me, I would resign from the party. However, I will not endure insults. I did not join Trinamool Congress through any quota nor did I migrate from any other party,” he declared.
Banerjee then directed his ire at Roy, labeling him as a politician stained by the Narada sting video scandal in 2016, where numerous Trinamool leaders, including Roy, were recorded accepting cash in exchange for promised favors. He accused Roy of damaging the reputation of Trinamool.
In response, Roy told the media that Banerjee has completely lost his sense of decorum. “Kalyan has completely lost his mental balance. He assumes he can say anything about anyone. There isn’t a single member in the party’s Parliamentary group who supports Kalyan,” he asserted.
Banerjee has expressed his willingness to leave the party if asked by the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, Malviya, on Tuesday, made another post on his X account regarding the dispute between Roy and Banerjee. “Kalyan says if Mamata herself were to declare he’s wrong, he would resign from the party and politics immediately. Now we know who’s supporting him!” Malviya’s message stated.
