Is a Political Slugfest Unfolding as Trinamool Accuses Delhi Police of Harassment?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, July 30 (NationPress) A heated political confrontation has emerged as the Trinamool Congress accused the Delhi Police of mistreating a Bengali-speaking migrant woman from Malda district in West Bengal along with her child in the national capital. This claim was also highlighted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Following the Chief Minister's recent social media post where she alleged that the Delhi Police subjected the woman and her son to harassment due to their language, and shared a related video, a senior official from the Delhi Police dismissed the accusations. He stated that the woman, Sajnur Parveen, acknowledged fabricating her story under the influence of others.
On Wednesday, the West Bengal minister overseeing municipal affairs and urban development, Firhad Hakim, who also serves as the Kolkata Mayor, along with the Trinamool Congress's state general secretary, Kunal Ghosh, held a press conference where they presented Sajnur Parveen.
During the press briefing, she reported that a team from the Delhi Police had harassed her and her son, even physically assaulting them while referring to them as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
She also alleged that the police demanded Rs 25,000 for her and her son’s release and coerced her into signing several documents.
Kunal Ghosh announced that the West Bengal government intends to file a First Information Report (FIR) against the Delhi Police regarding this incident. Firhad Hakim stated that the state government would fully support Parveen and her family.
In response to the press conference, the BJP’s Information Technology Cell Chief and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, made a statement on social media. He claimed that after Mamata Banerjee was caught spreading false information about Bengalis facing discrimination in BJP-ruled states, Hakim and Ghosh rushed to organize a fabricated press conference to support her.
“However, in their eagerness to promote a narrative of victimhood, they overlooked a crucial detail — rehearsing their script beforehand. These poorly executed stunts by Mamata Banerjee are becoming increasingly comical. My advice: Slow down. There’s no need to rush the theatrics. At least learn your lines next time,” Malviya remarked.
