The individual arrested is identified as Subir Maity, a leader within the Trinamool party.
Authorities stated that the arrest took place on Friday night.
Subir Maity is set to be presented in court in Contai, located in East Midnapore district later today.
A bomb explosion transpired in December 2022 in Naduabila village, within the Arjun Nagar gram panchayat area of Bhagabanpur Assembly constituency, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a Trinamool leader.
The NIA is actively investigating this case following directives from the Calcutta High Court.
Reports indicate that multiple Trinamool leaders were mentioned during the investigation, including Subir Maity, who resides in Arjun Nagar.
In response to a tip-off, officers from the Bhupati Nagar police station conducted a raid and discovered materials for bomb-making. Subir Maity was subsequently arrested.
"He was detained with ingredients for bomb production. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether these materials were intended for crafting firecrackers or crude explosives," stated an officer from the East Midnapore police.
BJP MLA from the Bhagabanpur Assembly constituency, Rabindranath Maity, commented, "With the upcoming 2026 state Assembly elections, the Trinamool party appears to be preparing to manufacture bombs in various homes and shops, aiming to foster violence during the elections."
In the meantime, Trinamool Congress members have taken to the streets to protest the detention of their leader.
However, Aparesh Santra, spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress in Contai, stated, "I am not fully informed on this issue. I will provide comments once I have all the relevant information regarding the case."
