Will Trinamool Congress Continue Its Legal and Political Fight Over I-PAC Raids?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 9 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister and leader of the Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee, affirmed on Friday that her party will persist with both legal actions and public demonstrations regarding the ongoing controversy tied to the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) raids on January 8. These operations targeted the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office in Salt Lake, located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, as well as the home of I-PAC co-founder Pratik Jain on Loudon Street in central Kolkata.
On that day, she spearheaded a protest march in south Kolkata, beginning at Jadavpur and concluding at Hazra crossing, where she elaborated on her party’s approach to the issue.
“Our struggle is against the oppression of the populace orchestrated from New Delhi. We are resisting the intentional removal of genuine voters’ names from the electoral rolls under the guise of the Special Intensive Revision. Our movement is aimed at safeguarding the rights of the citizens of West Bengal. Therefore, taking to the streets is essential to advance this cause, and we will keep it going,” declared the Chief Minister.
During her address, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of surreptitiously seizing power in various states, often through coercive means.
“They are attempting to replicate this strategy in West Bengal. The citizens of this state will no longer put up with it. I also possess information regarding BJP leaders’ connections to unaccounted finances. I have yet to disclose that, but I could if necessary. I have my limits; if I speak out now, it could escalate to an international issue,” she asserted.
Furthermore, she charged the BJP with disseminating false information about illegal Rohingya immigrants being listed as voters in West Bengal.
“Prior to the SIR, they alleged that numerous illegal Rohingya migrants were registered as voters. However, not a single one has been identified to date. Now, the BJP is attempting to erase the names of legitimate voters using the Election Commission of India,” the Chief Minister concluded.
