Tripura CM Affirms New Criminal Laws Will Enhance Citizens' Human Rights

Agartala, Dec 10 (NationPress) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Tuesday that the implementation of three new criminal laws in the country will significantly enhance the human rights of citizens.

While addressing an event to honor the International Human Rights Day in Agartala, the Chief Minister highlighted that these three new laws, effective from July 1 of this year, ensure the protection of the rights of women and children specifically.

He elaborated that under these laws, victims are empowered to file cases against offenders from anywhere in the nation.

Furthermore, Saha mentioned that the stringent regulations allow for the confiscation of the accused's property if they remain fugitives for an extended period.

The laws mandate that a chargesheet must be filed within 60 days and a conviction achieved within 90 days, he noted.

The newly introduced laws, namely Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act as of July 1 this year.

According to the Chief Minister, the establishment of the Human Rights Commission in the state followed a Supreme Court decision in 2016.

Saha emphasized that the fundamental rights and constitutional rights empower individuals to voice their concerns against any form of atrocity or discrimination in defending their ethnic and educational rights.

The principles of equality and human rights for all are deeply embedded in the ancient cultural heritage of India, he added, asserting that a key element of upholding the rule of law is the protection of the human rights of every citizen.

The Tripura Human Rights Commission hosted the event at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, where speakers included the rights panel chairman and former Tripura High Court Judge Swapan Chandra Das, Director General of Tripura Police Amitabh Ranjan, and Chairperson of the Tripura Women Commission Jharna Debbarma.
