Agartala, June 19 (NationPress) Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that the state government is evaluating the introduction of a chapter on sex education and HIV/AIDS awareness in the school curriculum for students from Class 8 to 12. A discussion with the Education Department is expected to follow soon.
While speaking at an awareness meeting convened by the AIDS Control Society in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister remarked on the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases in the region.
“Tripura shares borders with Bangladesh, and the influx of drugs is a concern. By increasing awareness about the factors contributing to HIV/AIDS, we can initiate a significant change,” stated Saha, who also oversees both Education and Health and Family Welfare portfolios.
The meeting on Thursday included participation from members of the Tripura Legislative Forum on HIV/AIDS.
He highlighted the importance of such discussions, noting that legislators often raise questions during Assembly sessions.
“We must unite to eradicate HIV/AIDS and combat this issue effectively. Our screening efforts have revealed the number of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. During the COVID pandemic, we conducted similar screenings,” said Saha, a trained dental surgeon.
He suggested that leaders could significantly impact the community by discussing these issues for just five minutes during their various programs, making it memorable for the public.
“Open discussions on sex education and HIV/AIDS are vital for addressing these issues,” Saha said, encouraging the collection of funds from MLAs for patients affected by HIV/AIDS.
He also pointed out that both boys and girls are impacted by this infectious disease, stressing the need for more youth engagement in sports, culture, and other activities to steer them away from drug addiction and HIV/AIDS.

“In comparison to 2023, drug seizures in 2024 have surged by 106%, and the destruction of seized drugs has increased by 132%. All public representatives must actively participate in the battle against drug issues. Notably, Tripura was the first state in India to establish Red Ribbon Clubs in schools, which we believe will benefit students. We need to empower our youth as ambassadors against drug abuse,” the Chief Minister said.
He urged everyone not to politicize this public health challenge; “This is a virus, and viruses do not recognize political affiliations.”
