Agartala, July 31 (NationPress) In a bid to enhance rice production and productivity, the Tripura Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department has launched a significant initiative aimed at promoting hybrid rice cultivation, setting an ambitious target of 25,200 hectares for the 2025-26 Kharif season.
Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath indicated that in the 2024-25 season, hybrid rice was grown across 35,000 hectares in Tripura, with 8,630 hectares cultivated during the Kharif season and 26,370 hectares during Rabi.
The Minister also noted that approximately 4,81,609 hectares of land are dedicated to various horticultural crops, while paddy is cultivated on about 2,40,804 hectares annually.
Additionally, he revealed that out of 58 blocks in the state, 30 blocks and three districts, namely South Tripura, Gomati, and Sepahijala, are currently experiencing food production self-sufficiency.
“To address the rice shortfall, we are emphasizing hybrid cultivation through the SRI (System of Rice Intensification) technique. Farmers are encouraged to transplant 20-day-old paddy seedlings, which can increase yields by 80 kg per 0.160 hectares,” the minister stated.
He also highlighted that in 2017-18, rice demand in Tripura was 8.26 lakh MT against a population of 39.75 lakh, with production at 7.70 lakh MT, leading to a shortfall of 56,000 MT.
With the population projected to reach 42.22 lakh in 2024-25, the demand has increased to 8.77 lakh MT, while production is at 8.30 lakh MT, resulting in a shortfall of around 47,000 MT.
“To alleviate this shortfall, the agriculture department has initiated hybrid rice cultivation, offering financial aid and support for fertilizers and other inputs to farmers who comply with government directives,” the Agriculture Minister explained.
Emphasizing the government's commitment to boost farmers' income, Nath mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions transforming India into a major hub for food grain storage, facilitating global exports.
“No other nation can export rice like India. Agriculture is the backbone of our country. I personally planted paddy to motivate farmers and youth. There are substantial opportunities to earn in agriculture, fisheries, and other sectors,” the Minister remarked.
On Thursday, Nath, who also oversees the power portfolio, planted paddy himself in the Simna Assembly Constituency of West Tripura district to inspire farmers and younger generations.
