Agartala, March 30 (NationPress) In a shocking episode in southern Tripura district on Sunday, an infuriated mob killed a mentally challenged young man after he reportedly murdered a neighbor by striking him with an iron rod, according to police reports.
A police spokesperson stated that Asish Debnath (40), a resident of Kalacherra village in southern Tripura’s Sabroom subdivision, who suffered from mental illness, became agitated on Sunday. Two of Asish’s neighbors attempted to calm him down, but he became increasingly aggressive and attacked them.
The spokesperson mentioned that he struck one of them with an iron rod, resulting in the immediate death of Deshaprita Bhattacharjee, while the other managed to escape.
“After fatally injuring Deshaprita Bhattacharjee, Asish transported the body to a nearby pond and lingered there for a while. Villagers alerted the police, who promptly arrived at the scene. Upon seeing the police vehicle, Asish attempted to flee while being pursued by both the police and local residents,” he added.
The spokesperson further noted that the furious mob apprehended him and severely beat him.
“Police transported Asish to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Asish had previously been arrested last year for assaulting police personnel and had since been released on bail,” he stated.
He also mentioned that police have initiated two separate investigations into the cases.
“Both deceased individuals have been sent for autopsy. A forensic team, accompanied by an Executive Magistrate and senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police (SP), has already examined the scenes,” he added.
The spokesperson indicated that the double homicide has incited fear and unrest throughout the entire Sabroom subdivision.
Local residents reported that Asish had also injured three other individuals.
