Tripura's first public EV charging station opens in Agartala; 94 more planned
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura's first public electric vehicle (EV) charging station was inaugurated in Agartala on Tuesday, 23 June, marking a milestone in the state's push toward clean and sustainable transportation. The facility, located at the Banamalipur Power House campus, is now operational for public use and is the first CAPEX-based public EV charging station in the state.
The Facility and Its Features
The station has been set up by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) in collaboration with a private organisation. It is equipped with a 30 kW DC fast charger and a 7.4 kW AC charger, making it suitable for both private and commercial electric vehicles.
A standout feature of the facility is its fully digital, self-service charging system. Users do not require staff assistance — they simply install a designated mobile application, select their vehicle model, complete payment online, and connect the charging gun. The charging process begins automatically and stops once the selected charge level is reached.
Plans for Statewide Expansion
As the nodal agency for the Central government's PM E-Drive Scheme, TSECL has already submitted a proposal for the establishment of 94 additional public EV charging stations at various locations across the state, according to a senior official of the corporation.
TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu said the corporation is working on a comprehensive long-term plan to expand charging infrastructure across Tripura. 'Once this ambitious project is implemented, EV charging facilities will be available in almost all major parts of the state, significantly improving charging accessibility for vehicle owners,' Basu said.
Why This Matters for Tripura
Officials noted that the growing adoption of electric vehicles helps reduce fuel expenses for consumers while playing a crucial role in cutting environmental pollution. The launch is described as a major boost for existing EV owners as well as those planning to purchase electric vehicles.
This comes amid a broader national push under the PM E-Drive Scheme to build out EV charging infrastructure in states that have so far lagged in green mobility adoption. Tripura, a landlocked northeastern state with limited fuel supply chains, stands to benefit disproportionately from a reliable local charging network.
What Comes Next
Basu indicated that the initiative is expected to accelerate EV adoption, strengthen green mobility infrastructure, and contribute to the vision of a cleaner and more sustainable Tripura. The approval and rollout of the proposed 94 charging stations under the PM E-Drive Scheme will be the key metric to watch in the months ahead.
