Washington, Aug 6 (NationPress) - On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump revealed that he has enacted an executive order imposing a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India, due to the nation’s ongoing procurement of Russian oil.
The White House clarified that this measure is intended to enhance the sanctions already in place against Russia following its actions in Ukraine. This announcement follows last week’s declaration of a similar 25 percent tariff on India.
The order specifies that India is either directly or indirectly importing oil from Russia, which the US views as a risk to its national security and foreign policy.
"Accordingly, and in accordance with applicable law, items imported from India into the customs territory of the United States will incur an additional ad valorem duty of 25 percent," the order states.
The new tariffs will take effect on all eligible Indian imports arriving in the US 21 days after the order is signed, with exceptions for shipments already in transit prior to the cutoff date and cleared before September 17.
"Subject to section 3 of this order, this duty rate will apply to goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption on or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time 21 days post-order date, except for goods that (1) were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit prior to 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, and (2) are entered for consumption or withdrawn from the warehouse before 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 17," the order further explains.
These tariffs are in addition to existing duties unless the goods qualify for specific exemptions outlined in prior trade executive orders.
Items impacted by this order must also adhere to strict customs regulations, including being admitted into US foreign trade zones under "privileged foreign status".
Trump maintains the ability to adjust the order based on evolving circumstances, retaliation from affected nations, or significant policy changes by either Russia or India.
The order also instructs the US Commerce Department, State Department, Treasury, and other agencies to oversee the oil trade activities of other nations with Russia and suggest similar measures if deemed necessary.
