Shillong, Jan 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, inaugurated the foundation stone for the Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme on Monday, emphasizing that this initiative transcends mere infrastructure; it embodies a vision for a sustainable future in the region.

“The Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme is not merely an infrastructure endeavor but a blueprint for a brighter, more sustainable future for Tura,” the Chief Minister stated during a ceremony at the Tura District Auditorium.

He noted that this project was originally envisioned with Late P A Sangma in 2004-2005, aiming to alleviate the water challenges faced by urban Tura at that time, while also benefiting sectors like agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.

“Thus, it fills me with great joy that we are laying the foundation stone for this significant project today,” he expressed.

Sangma highlighted that the Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme comes with an estimated budget of Rs 398.48 crore and is an ambitious initiative designed to tackle the water scarcity issues in Tura.

“This scheme aims to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for Tura,” he noted.

The Chief Minister further shared that this project is funded by the Union government under the Special Assistance on Capital Investment and is projected for completion within 24-36 months.

“This scheme represents the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all Tura residents. By investing in this crucial infrastructure, we are not only meeting an urgent need but also paving the way for long-term economic prosperity and development,” he added.

Sangma remarked that upon its completion, the project is expected to have a profound effect on public health, promote economic expansion, and improve the overall quality of life for Tura's citizens.

He reiterated that the Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme is not just about infrastructure but is a vision for a more sustainable future.

The Chief Minister encouraged active involvement and cooperation from the local community to ensure the project's successful realization.

“I urge all stakeholders to work together, especially in safeguarding and protecting the catchment areas, as the government can initiate projects and construct reservoirs, but the water sources for these reservoirs must be preserved,” he explained.

He emphasized that by engaging residents at every stage, the government aims to instill a sense of ownership and accountability, enabling the people of Tura to take pride in their contributions to their town's development.

The Chief Minister also outlined several developmental programs and projects designed to secure a brighter future for all residents of Tura.
