Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday, 22 May laid the foundation stones for urban infrastructure projects worth over ₹150 crore in Tura, aiming to transform the Garo Hills town into a modern commercial, cultural, and tourism destination ahead of the 39th National Games in 2027. The initiative marks one of the most significant urban investment pushes in western Meghalaya in recent years.

Key Projects Announced

The centrepiece of the redevelopment is the Najing Bazar Redevelopment Project, sanctioned at ₹60.76 crore, which will include a commercial complex, parking facilities, hotel accommodation, a banquet hall, nearly 200 shops, and expanded vendor infrastructure. Alongside it, the Dakopgre multi-level parking and cinema complex, budgeted at ₹51.21 crore, will offer parking for around 200 vehicles along with three cinema halls, gaming zones, and food courts designed to stimulate local economic activity.

Additional components include refurbishment of the SMELC building and the creation of an Art and Culture Promenade, museum spaces, a CM Youth Centre, and an Active Ageing Centre — all intended to preserve and celebrate Garo cultural identity while modernising civic infrastructure.

Smart City Features and Safety Upgrades

The state government is also investing in urban cleanliness and public safety through a locality grading system, the installation of 552 LED smart streetlights at a cost of ₹6.51 crore, and the deployment of nearly 500 CCTV cameras integrated with command and control systems. These measures reflect a broader push to bring smart-city standards to Tier-2 towns in the Northeast.

Citizen Services and CM Connect Initiative

Chief Minister Sangma used the occasion to reaffirm the state government's commitment to citizen-centric governance. He announced that CM Connect Offices would be set up across all 56 blocks of Meghalaya to decentralise services and reduce citizens' dependence on district headquarters.

'Every citizen should be able to connect directly with the government. The 1971 helpline is a complaint registration and grievance redressal system where grievances are monitored in real time until resolution,' Sangma said.

During the event, the Chief Minister also distributed cheques under the Chief Minister Artists Engagement Scheme and launched the Tura Municipal Board mobile application to improve civic service delivery.

National Games 2027 as the Catalyst

Officials confirmed that the urban interventions are directly aligned with preparations for the National Games 2027, targeting improvements in tourism infrastructure, mobility, and civic amenities. This comes amid a broader Northeast India push to leverage major sporting events as catalysts for long-pending urban upgrades — a pattern seen earlier with Guwahati's infrastructure build-up around regional games.

The event was attended by Garo Hills Autonomous District Council members, local body representatives, artists, and community leaders. With groundwork now laid, the pace of execution over the next 18 months will determine whether Tura is ready for its moment on the national stage.
