Early trends in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results on Monday, 4 May indicated a significant setback for several high-profile Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, even as actor Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as a formidable challenger across the state, disrupting the traditional two-party contest between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

BJP's High-Profile Candidates Under Pressure

State BJP president Nainar Nagenthran is trailing in the Sattur Assembly constituency — his first contest there after shifting from Tirunelveli — behind DMK candidate Kadarkarairaj A by 909 votes, according to early counting data. Union Minister L. Murugan is facing a stiff challenge in the Avanashi (SC) constituency, trailing TVK candidate Kamali S by 2,080 votes.

In Chennai's Mylapore constituency, former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan is trailing TVK's Venkataramanan P by a substantial 9,296 votes, one of the largest early margins recorded in an urban seat. BJP Mahila Morcha president Vanathi Srinivasan, who shifted to Coimbatore North after winning Coimbatore South in 2021, is currently behind TVK's V. Sampath Kumar by 839 votes.

Where BJP Holds Ground

The BJP, contesting 27 seats as part of its alliance with the AIADMK, is not without bright spots. Candidates M.R. Gandhi, Bhojarajan M, and C. Nagesh Kumar are leading in Nagercoil, Udhagamandalam, and Thalli, respectively, according to Election Commission of India (ECI) data. However, in Vilavancode, BJP candidate Vijayadharani S is trailing Congress' candidate Praveen T.T. by 6,697 votes. In Salem North, Tourism Minister R. Rajendran is trailing by 5,508 votes after 10 rounds of counting, with the TVK candidate establishing a comfortable lead.

TVK's Growing Momentum Across Constituencies

The scale of TVK's early performance is reshaping the narrative of this election. In Virudhunagar, TVK's P. Selvam has extended his lead to 2,455 votes over DMDK's V. Vijayaprabhakaran. In Krishnarayapuram in Karur district, TVK candidate M. Sathya is locked in a nail-biting contest, leading by just five votes against AIADMK's S. Dhivya. In Chennai's T. Nagar constituency, TVK's N. Anand has opened up a commanding lead, underlining the party's expanding urban footprint.

Notably, TVK is contesting its first-ever Assembly election under the leadership of actor-turned-politician Vijay, making its early showing across both urban and rural seats a significant political development.

AIADMK and Allies Hold Pockets of Strength

Not all results favour the challengers. AIADMK's S. Rajendran is leading in Ariyalur, while PMK's Vaithilingam is ahead in Jayankondam, suggesting the AIADMK-led alliance retains a base in parts of central and northern Tamil Nadu.

As counting progresses, the early data points to a significant churn in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. TVK's performance — particularly in urban constituencies and in seats where it is directly challenging both the DMK and BJP — suggests that the Vijay-led party has successfully converted its campaign momentum into early vote leads.
