Guwahati, Feb 10 (NationPress) Assam Police apprehended two individuals on Monday for allegedly deceiving job seekers by soliciting money under the guise of providing government employment, according to officials.

The suspects have been named as Shamim Ahmed and Nabajit Barman.

A senior police official disclosed that Ahmed and Barman operated a forum aimed at persons with disabilities and amassed a significant sum of money from individuals by falsely assuring them of jobs within state government agencies.

“The accused reportedly extracted Rs 3-4 lakhs from each job seeker in the government sector. We had been monitoring their activities for several days before their eventual arrest,” the official stated.

The police transported the suspects to Panbazar police station for questioning by the investigative team. A case has been filed against the pair under applicable legal provisions.

It is pertinent to mention that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously stated that the state government had provided over 1.25 lakh jobs in the past three years, with plans to exceed 1.7 lakh before the upcoming assembly elections.

The Chief Minister also indicated that these job allocations were conducted transparently, with no reports of malpractice.

He remarked, “In 2021, we pledged to deliver 1 lakh jobs to the youth of Assam. Currently, we have allocated 400 jobs across various government departments, including education and health. With today’s figures, the total government job count has reached the 1.25 lakh milestone. We are committed to offering more employment opportunities in the near future, aiming for at least 1.7 lakh jobs by 2026.”

Sarma emphasized that no prior state government has managed to provide such a substantial number of jobs in Assam's history.

“I firmly believe that no previous administration has a record of delivering this many jobs in a single term. Furthermore, every appointment has been made transparently, and the youth in the state no longer have concerns regarding malpractice in the recruitment process. There hasn't been a single legal challenge against the recruitment initiatives,” he added.
