Two Officials Face Charges Following Collapse of Smelting Facility in Mungeli, Chhattisgarh

Mungeli (Chhattisgarh), Jan 11 (NationPress) Just a day after a labourer lost his life in a silo collapse at a smelting facility located in Chhattisgarh's Mungeli district, police have filed an FIR against the manager, in-charge, and multiple others involved in the incident on Friday.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Navneet Kaur Chhabra, the FIR was registered under sections 106 (1), 289, and 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The rescue operation, which included personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), has been ongoing for over 33 hours to locate workers who are believed to be trapped under the rubble at the site.
Reports suggest that three to four workers might still be trapped beneath the debris.
The FIR names plant in-charge Amit Kedia and manager Anil Prasad under sections 106 (A) (causing death by negligence), 289 (negligent conduct concerning machinery), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to a police spokesperson.
One labourer was confirmed dead and another injured due to the collapse of a silo at Kusum Smelters Private Limited, situated near Rambod village in the Sargaon area, police added.
Commenting on the situation regarding the silo collapse at the smelting facility, Mungeli Collector Rahul Deo stated that site clearance is currently in progress, which will be followed by the continuation of the rescue operation.
Additionally, he noted that teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and the necessary rescue equipment are actively present at the incident site.
"Some workers were trapped when a silo structure at the smelting plant collapsed yesterday. Currently, site clearance is ongoing, after which rescue efforts will resume. We have SDRF and NDRF teams along with rescue equipment at the location. Once the silo structure is removed, we expect to resume the rescue mission. If conditions are favorable, we should be able to complete the work within 5-6 hours," he remarked.
The rescue operation remains active in an effort to save the trapped workers.
Further investigations into the incident are currently underway, as confirmed by a police official.
The rescue efforts involving the NDRF, SDRF, police, and district administration officials are still ongoing, as reports indicate that 3-4 workers are believed to be trapped under the rubble, the official mentioned.
The silo was cleared using large cranes, and now, significant amounts of fly ash dust are being removed from the site, after which everything will be clarified, he added.
