Kolkata, Dec 8 (NationPress) An undertrial prisoner charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act made a daring escape from a correctional facility located in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, leading authorities to demand a report on the security breach that enabled this incident, as reported by the police on Monday.
The escape at the Serampore Subsidiary Correctional Home was discovered on Sunday morning during a routine headcount conducted by prison guards. In response to the incident, the administration has requested a comprehensive report from the jail superintendent. Officials indicated that the police are preparing to issue a look-out notice for the accused.
According to Serampore Sub Divisional Officer Sombhudwip Sarkar, a report has been officially requested from the jail superintendent of this correctional facility.
"We have asked the jail superintendent for a report regarding this sub-correctional facility. Following that, an investigation has commenced. Authorities learned that the accused had successfully escaped from the correctional home on Sunday. The police are actively searching for him," he stated.
DCP Serampore, Arnab Biswas from the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, confirmed that a written complaint was filed by the correctional home authorities, which has initiated an investigation.
"The authorities of the correctional facility have lodged a formal complaint with the Serampore police station, and an investigation is underway based on that complaint. A POCSO case that was being heard at the Serampore court involved the accused, who was housed at the Serampore sub-correctional centre. A look-out notice will be issued if necessary," he added.
It has been reported that the missing undertrial was accounted for during the Saturday night cell count, as documented in the daily report of the prison guards.
However, upon the next count, his cell was discovered empty. The warden quickly informed the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate and the district administration.
The fugitive has multiple prior complaints against him registered at the Rishra and Mogra police stations.
