While one suspect was quickly apprehended, four others managed to flee, initiating a widespread police search.
As per a law enforcement official, the escape transpired just after the conclusion of a court session.
The five detainees, who were under police custody, somehow freed themselves from their handcuffs and escaped the lockup, reportedly after overpowering a guard.
“The suspects were being led back to the lockup after their court hearing when they seized the opportunity to escape. One has been captured, and efforts to locate the remaining fugitives are ongoing,” stated Sadar DSP Sanjay Kumar Pandey.
The individuals who escaped have been identified as Rajnandan Kumar, implicated under the Arms Act (FIR registered at Town Police Station, Case No. 05/25); Manish Kumar, charged with robbery (FIR at Sarairanjan Police Station, Case No. 113/25); Arvind Sahani, also facing robbery charges (Sarairanjan Police Station, Case No. 113/25); and Manjeet Kumar, similarly charged (Sarairanjan Police Station, Case No. 113/25).
The individual who was apprehended is identified as Nagendra Kumar.
According to the police, the accused were in judicial custody linked to ongoing investigations and were present for routine court proceedings at the time of the incident.
This incident marks not the first instance of security failures at Samastipur Court. A previous incident involving gunfire aimed at an accused in custody was reported earlier.
Sadar DSP Sanjay Kumar Pandey emphasized, “This is a serious concern. A thorough investigation is underway, and strict action will be pursued against any negligence by security personnel.”
The city police, under the direction of the station chief, have initiated extensive raids on potential hideouts.
All police stations in the district and nearby areas have been notified. Surveillance measures and check posts have been established in surrounding regions to prevent the fugitives from leaving the district.
