Agartala, Oct 2 (NationPress) The Tripura government has taken action by suspending five officials following the escape of six inmates — five undertrial prisoners and one serving a life sentence — from a local jail, officials reported on Thursday.
On Thursday, security forces managed to rearrest one more fugitive, bringing the total apprehended to two, while an extensive search continues for the remaining four escapees.
A representative from the Jail Department stated that the Inspector General of Prisons has suspended Dhananjoy Bhattacharya (Jailor), alongside Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatia, Mohammad Gedu Mia, and Notan Lodh, all of whom are Warders, in relation to the jailbreak incident at the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura district that transpired on Wednesday morning.
Disciplinary actions are set to be initiated against all five jail personnel, as efforts to locate the remaining fugitives continue for a second day, following the escape of six inmates in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to the official, Abdul Patta and Narayan Chandra Datta, two of the six inmates who fled from the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail at Kalikapur, were apprehended on Wednesday evening and Thursday in the vicinity of the Dharmanagar police station.
The escape occurred when the inmates were taken out of their cells for breakfast and daily routines, during which they assaulted a guard using sharp objects. The injured guard, Bedu Miah, is currently being treated at the Dharmanagar District Hospital, with his condition reported as stable.
Following the jailbreak, a large-scale search operation was initiated by various security teams, and the efforts continue as they seek to capture the remaining escapees.
North Tripura district Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai is actively leading one of the search teams, with all police stations and security posts in North Tripura and nearby Unakoti districts being put on high alert.
“We’ve also coordinated with the Border Security Force (BSF) to ensure stringent surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border, preventing the escapees from crossing over,” the official added.
North Tripura district borders Assam and Mizoram, in addition to having an international boundary with Bangladesh.
In light of the incident, all exit points along the borders with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh have been sealed to stop the fleeing inmates from escaping the state.
The escapees include undertrial prisoners Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, and Nazim Uddin, alongside Sunil Debbarma, who is serving a life sentence for serious offenses including murder.
Notably, Narayan Chandra Dutta is a Bangladeshi national previously arrested in Tripura under various acts, while Abdul Pata hails from Nilambazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district.
Abdul Pata has faced prior charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 for his involvement in illegal drug activities.
