Agartala, Oct 1 (NationPress) In the early hours of Wednesday, one of the six inmates who fled from a Tripura jail has been captured, while a rigorous search is still in progress to locate the other five escapees, officials reported.
A police spokesperson mentioned that Abdul Patta, among the six inmates who escaped from the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail located in Kalikapur, North Tripura district, was apprehended on Wednesday evening in South Chandrapur under the jurisdiction of the Dharmanagar police station.
Authorities are conducting a thorough search operation to locate the remaining five fugitives, as confirmed by the police official.
According to officials, the escape involved six inmates—five undertrial prisoners and one serving a life sentence—who managed to flee from the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail after attacking a guard with sharp implements.
The incident unfolded when jail staff brought the inmates out for breakfast and their daily personal care routines. The injured guard, Bedu Miah, is currently receiving treatment at the Dharmanagar District Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.
Following the incident, a significant search effort was initiated by multiple security teams, with the hunt for the escapees ongoing. North Tripura district Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai is personally leading one of the search units.
All police stations and security posts in North Tripura and the neighboring Unakoti district have been put on high alert.
“We have also sought assistance from the Border Security Force to maintain vigilant monitoring along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent the escapees from crossing over,” stated an official.
North Tripura district is bordered by Assam and Mizoram, as well as an international border with Bangladesh.
Officials confirmed that all exit points along Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh have been sealed to prevent the escapees from leaving the state.
The inmates on the run include Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, and Nazim Uddin, while Sunil Debbarma, accused of serious crimes including murder, is currently serving a life sentence.
Narayan Chandra Dutta is a Bangladeshi national previously arrested in Tripura under various Acts related to passports, while Abdul Pata hails from Nilambazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj district).
Abdul Pata was previously arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, for his involvement in illegal drug activities.
